Beard Radio 31.3.08

Spring arrives! Beard radio celebrates! 31.3.08

Just me tonight, but a member of the Jacques family will be dropping by next week!

Fire and brimstone country, oceanic disco, Senegalese singer-songwriters, a ten year old free jazz drummer, and some Alaskan post-punk. The latter, I should add, is by the Anaemic Boyfriends. I have no idea if this song is commercially available - came across it a couple of years ago on an internet forum where MP3s of John Peel's singles box were being traded. Beard shall investigate further, because they totally rule. Also! My amazing anecdote about seeing Antony Hegarty in a Glasgow libary...

Save Pollok Park!

Thought this was worth bringing to people's attention. If you live in Glasgow you may be aware of proposals to turn part of Pollok Park into a Go Ape! Adventure Course. Fuck that shit. Pollok Estate was gifted to the people of Glasgow by the Maxwell family - it is not the City Council's to sell off. Furthermore, our green spaces are precious and there is much to suggest that this development will be detrimental to the environment and atmosphere of the park.

Stefan King and his G1 Group seem to have abandoned their plans to turn the old Botanic Gardens underground station into another one of their shitty nightclubs - let's hope Go Ape's plans go the same way.

I'll let SavePollokPark take up the story:

Glasgow City Council's planning committee are visiting the site for the proposed Go Ape! aerial adventure course on the 25th of March 2008. SavePollokPark are organising a group of people to represent those who are opposed to plans to visit the Burrell and the City Chambers on that day. (for new members to the group please follow this link)

SavePollokPark
also has an online petition which requires as many signatures as possible to help represent the opinion of those against the idea.

SPP intend to present to the Council and Planning Applications Committee a petition with all signatures collected - more than 3,000 thus far.

They would really appreciate if those of you who have not yet signed the petition would take a few minutes to follow this link.

And if you have the time and the inclination, please get as many family and friends to sign the petition online as possible.

Again thanks for your time and support with this cause and know that you are making a huge difference for the future of Glasgow and its heritage.

Village Fete - art, design and music!

If you're in Edinburgh on Saturday why not pay a visit to the Village Fete? There will be music and art and design. All kinds of goodness. And I'll be playing some records, but don't let that put you off.

I'll let the organisers fill in the rest:

'The Village Fete' is almost here and it's going to be pretty lovely we reckon. A whole day of arty stuff with some amazing live music and little something to eat. There's all sorts for sale; jewellery, clothing, accessories, prints, books, cards, records and plenty more besides. There will also be origami, colouring in and a raffle (in true fete style) to win some of the nice stuff on sale.

Throughout the afternoon there'll be some lovely live music organised for us by Tracer Trails...here's what's on offer...

RANDAN DISCOTHEQUE, embroiderer and quasi-comic songwriter extraordinaire, will be celebrating the news that the Prince did in fact go to Iraq;

WITHERED HAND, father of two and pillar of the community, will be continuing his battle against folk music;

WOUNDED KNEE that ex-German beard-grower, will be making things up as he goes along;

and in the gaps, veritable cottage industry STEWART FROM BEARD MAGAZINE AND SUB CITY RADIO will be playing Aretha Franklin records.

It runs from 11am-4pm and it would be lovely to see as many of you as possible.

Beard radio 3 March '08

This week: a couple of reggae classics produced by the late great Joel Gibb, who sadly passed away the other week, and some hard driving psychedelic soul from Buddy Miles, another sad loss. Plus sweet outsider folk from Michael Hurley (top photo), neo-tropicalia party sounds from El Guincho, gorgeous vintage Cuban pop from Los Zafiros (middle), gloriously nasty post-hardcore from Pissed Jeans, hard bop from Miles, ju-ju, heavy psychedelic dronage, and our favourite Swedish surf group splicing Jimmy Shand and Link Wray - yes, it can only be The Spotniks!

Apologies for the minute of silence after the first track - simple technology defeats me once again...

Althea & Donna - Uptown Top Ranking (Lightning 7" 1977)
U Brown - Train To Zion (Dread Meets Punk Rockers Uptown)
